After passing only the NISM Investment adviser (XA-L1) and (XB-L2) and NISM Research Analyst (XV) exams can I give advice and take service charge?

SEBI registration is a hot topic nowadays, everyone wants to be a SEBI-registered Research analyst and Investment adviser. The common misconception is that if we pass NISM exams prescribed by SEBI for Research analyst and Investment adviser, we are certified advisers and give advise and start taking service charges.

The term certified and registered are two different things. Certification is a part of SEBI registration, you have to complete other criteria too for the SEBI Investment adviser and Research analyst license.

Some of the criteria for SEBI Investment adviser and Research analyst are mentioned below:

For Investment Adviser:

  1. A professional qualification or post-graduate degree or post graduate diploma (minimum two years in duration) in finance, accountancy, business management, commerce, economics, capital market, banking, insurance or actuarial science from a university or an institution recognized by the Central Government or any State Government or a recognised foreign university or institution or association or a professional qualification by completing a Post Graduate Program in the Securities Market (Investment Advisory) from NISM of a duration not less than one year or a professional qualification by obtaining a CFA Charter from the CFA Institute;]
  2. An experience of at least five years in activities relating to advice in financial products or securities or fund or asset or portfolio management;
  3. and anytime NISM certification (NISM XA & XB)

For Research Analyst:

  1. A professional qualification or post-graduate degree or post graduate diploma in finance, accountancy, business management, commerce, economics, capital market, financial services or markets with recognized universities.
  2. professional qualification or post-graduate degree or post graduate diploma which is accredited by All Indian Council for Technical Education, National Assessment and Accreditation Council or National Board of Accreditation or any other council/board/body set up under an Act of Parliament in India for the purpose; or
  3. a graduate in any discipline with an experience of at least five years in activities relating to financial products or markets or securities or fund or asset or portfolio management.
  4. and anytime NISM certification (NISM XV)

After qualifying the above criteria you can apply for SEBI registration, after verifying all the details SEBI will grant you a registration number, after that you can start giving advice and charging money for your advice from Investors.

Without having SEBI registration number you are not authorized to give advice or recommendations or charge money from Investors. Be aware if any complaint put on your behalf in SEBI by any Investors it will create trouble in future while you try to apply for SEBI license.

Hope this article helps you to solve your query.
